​An American roadside wonder . . . one of the largest 'Tourist Traps' in US...  and well worth a visit. Not just the 5 cent coffee or free ice water.  Its a huge complex that offers an abundance of items for viewing & sale - since 1931. ​

​​​Consists of 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the largest protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. The Lakota gave this land its name, “Mako Sica,” meaning “land bad.” It is desolation at its truest, where you can look for miles and see no sign of civilization. This land has been so ruthlessly ravaged by wind and water that it has become picturesque. The Badlands are a wonderland of bizarre, colorful spires and pinnacles, massive buttes and deep gorges. Badlands National Park also preserves the world’s greatest fossil beds of animals from the Oligocene Epoch of the Age of Mammals. The Badlands also contains an abundance of wildlife: bison, deer, Bighorn sheep, antelope, prairie dogs and much more.

  • (A) Exit the Park and visit the Minuteman Missile Center
  • (B) Exit Park and travel to Scenic Ghost Town

  • Minuteman Missile National Historic Site (A)
It protects two facilities that were once part of a Minuteman Missile field that covered the far western portion of South Dakota from 1963 through the early 1990s. 

​Exhibits share stories of the technology that made it possible, service men and women, citizens near and far who feared the worst, the call for civil defense, and leaders at home and abroad who led the world to the brink and back. People raised in the 1950s and 60s will reminder "Duck and Cover" moments. 
  • Scenic Ghost Town (B)
​Scenic is now considered to be a ghost town. A number of the buildings are still standing, including the Longhorn Saloon, the outdoor iron jail, and an old church that has been converted into a trading post.
Scenic has a varied and robust history. It was once the railroad center for shipping Government cattle for the Pine Ridge Reservation. And also was the business center for local ranchers and homesteaders. Today it offers a chance to step back in time . . . great history and photo ops.
