Black Hills- Movie Trivia

Picture
Deadwood - Dances with Wolves

The HBO show "Deadwood" was based on this town and the people who built it . . . Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, Al Swearengen, Sol Star, Charlie Utter,  George Hearst and many more.
The "Winter Scene" from Dances with Wolves was filmed in the Spearfish Canyon at Rough Lock Falls.
Kevin Costner fell in love with the Hills and built The Midnight Star Casino in downtown Deadwood. In the second floor restaurant, all his movie costumes are on display.

Mt Rushmore- Movies

Picture
National Treasure II - North by Northwest
In 1959  Alfred Hitchcock produced North by Northwest staring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. Much of the movie was filmed at Mt Rushmore and is considered one of the top five films ever made.
National Treasure II was filmed in the Black Hills in 2007 and stared Nicholas Cage and Diane Kruger.  They were looking for treasure hidden in a vault somewhere near Mt Rushmore - this is partly true.

Rapid City - Hanging Tree

Picture
Ox-Bow Incident 1943- Photo of actual Hanging in 1877 - That tree is still standing today on Skyline Drive.

HANGING TREE in Rapid City -In 1877 two horse thieves and one innocent 'Kid" were taken from jail and lynched by a group of vigilantes. Because there had not been a trial this "Incident"  led to many years of conflict between the town members.  In the 1940's a movie was made based on what happened that night in Rapid City.  The Ox-Bow Incident stared Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn and displayed what happens to a town when they hang innocent men.
