Mt Rushmore at Sunset
With Skyline Drive - Iron Mountan Tunnels - Washingtons Profile - Norbeck Overlook Stargazing
& Mount Rushmore Lighting at Sunset
STARTS TUESDAY OCTOBER 1st
Touring in our specialized Mercedes Glass Top Sprinter Van.
- We depart Rapid City and meander along Skyline Drive. Worderful views of the mountains to the west and the Badlands to the east. As you travel you will learn the history of the 1974 Flood, about Dinosuar Park and the story of the infamous Hanging Tree.
- During the days light, as we drive you up the mountian, you will learn the history of Mt Rushmore and Peter Norbeck. You will experience many wonderous views - Black Hills National Forest, Black Elk Peak, Iron Mtn Road, Norbeck Overlook and the Badlands in the distance.
- One of the first stops is at a lessor known view of Mt Rushmore . . . to the west of the main entrances and near a small parking lot, we stop for photos of George Washington's Profile. This was never intened to be at attraction but has become one of his famous pictures.
- On our way to the Norberk Overlook we travel up Iron Mtn Road. Experiencing the one of a kind pigtail bridges and famous one way tunnels, pausing for photos.
- At dusk you will witness the golden-red sunset over the mountain range . . . and then as Mt Rushmore goes dark . . . the bright white lights come up and illuminate the four faces of the monument.
- With the darkening sky we begin our search of the heavens . . . finding passing satilites, falling stars and view the great expanse of the Milky Way.
- As we return you will view the lighted monument through the one-way tunnels on Iron Mtn Road. Few get to see this.
+ Lighted Tunnels
After the Night Ceremony - We depart in our Convertible Top Vans to explore Iron Mtn Road and its famous one-way tunnels.
We slide the top open and enjoy fantastic views looking through the one-way tunnels . . . looking back at the Four Faces lighted on the mountain. Views that not many visitors get to see.
+ Stargazing
We then continue to the top of Iron Mountain to Stargaze from Norbeck Overlook - (weather permitting)
Because of ambient city lights, over 80% of Americans never get to see stars. The Black Hills provides a wonderful stage for viewing the distant planets and Milky Way.
