Minuteman Missile Site
Badlands North & South Units
Sprinter Van - Jeep Liberty
(Both with Convertible-Tops for great wildlife viewing
and Cold AC for comfort.)
The South Unit of the Park has a few rustic roads that usually requires a rugged vehicle for travel. This area had previously been used as a bombing range by the US Air Force. They have recently restored to its pre WW-II condition and opened it for public access. The South Unit includes
Sheep Mountain Road and the seldom viewed Stronghold Table (location of the famous 19th century Lakota Ghost Dance). Stronghold and Sheep Mountain Tables are also favorite sites for young Lakota men to go to fast and pray, hoping to have a vision for their future.
Before entering the North Unit we stop
at the old ranching town of Scenic for photos and
a short history of the town. We then travel along Sage Creek Road where we may encounter multiple wildlife: buffalo, wild turkey, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, deer, prairie dogs and more. It's here that we stop at Sage Creek for a picnic lunch surrounded by the buffalo.
At the North Unit we drive along the paved highway known as the 'Loop' , enjoying the unique landscapes developed by thousands of years of wind and water. We stop at lookouts for viewing
and photo ops and there are several trails available for short walks. The tour also includes the Ben Reifel Center (museum and movie) and the Window and Door short walking trails.
After leaving the Park we stop at the
Minuteman Missile Historic Site. The Minuteman Site is a museum that will take you back to 1962 and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
